Pride Is Joy Work
A Pride Month reflection on joy as protest, community care, and sacred survival — reminding us that Pride is not a performance, but a practice of resilience and love.

It’s the start of Pride Month. The flags are out, the parades are planned, and the corporate posts have already begun. But Pride is more than a moment. It’s a reminder of what it means to fight for joy when your existence is politicized, policed, and misunderstood.
🌈 Here’s what Pride teaches us about joy:
Joy is protest. Black queer joy, as The Art of Ridicule reminds us, is a refusal. It’s about showing up with laughter, love, and light in spaces that try to dim us.
Joy is community care. Alok and Rachel Ricketts remind us that queer joy comes from being held. It’s found in the people who witness our pain and still believe in our healing.
Joy is sacred. Whether in meditation or in digital spaces, Black queer folks are creating spiritual homes for joy. That’s not accidental. It’s a strategy for survival.
Pride is not a performance. It’s a practice. A commitment to joy, even in the face of exhaustion. Especially in the face of harm.
