Joy in Community at SAFElab
A reflection on finding joy in community through SAFElab—a space for research, vulnerability, and care—celebrating milestones and centering connection before deadlines.

Despite the whiplash of this week’s events, today I’m feeling a deep, personal joy—one that comes from being in community.
I'm spending the day in SAFElab, a space I started back in 2012 as an assistant professor at the University of Michigan. It has moved with me ever since, and over the years, it has become more than just a research lab—it’s a home. A place where I’ve had the privilege to meet, train, and learn from brilliant students, community leaders, and colleagues.
Yes, we do rigorous, groundbreaking research. But at its core, SAFElab is about vulnerability, care, and living out the values of social work in everything we do. And today was a day of celebration! 🎉
🔹 One of our postdocs landed an incredible faculty position in the Northeast.
🔹 A visiting fellow just launched a new clinical practice and was accepted into a PhD program.
But what I love most is that before we dive into the work, we check in with each other—not about deadlines, but about how we actually feel. Because I’ve learned that we cannot do transformative research if we are not connected in mind, body, and spirit.
Today, being surrounded by this community lifted my spirit in ways I didn’t even know I needed.
So, I ask you: What’s bringing you personal joy today? Drop it in the comments—I’d love to celebrate with you. 💛✨
