As we mature, sustaining community becomes more challenging. In our 20s, connections often formed naturally—through college, sports teams, or new jobs. But as life gets busier with careers, families, and other commitments, intentionality is key.

One core memory that reminds me of the beauty of community is from my youth. My grandmother’s sister-in-law would often stop by for a quick conversation, share a beloved family recipe, or simply borrow that much-needed sugar to make one of those down-home pound cakes I love. That simple act of connection taught me that community is built through genuine, spontaneous moments of care—and it’s a lesson that still guides me today.

Here’s a step-by-step process for building community as part of your Joy Plan:

Reflect on Your Needs:

Identify what you truly need in your community. Is it mentorship, friendship, professional support, or simply someone to share ideas with?

Define Your Values:

Consider what matters most to you. Whether it’s trust, support, or shared passion, knowing your values helps you seek out like-minded individuals.

Take the Initiative:

Don’t wait for someone to reach out. Start by reconnecting with old acquaintances or reaching out to new people. Even a simple message can spark a meaningful conversation.

Create Opportunities for Connection:

Whether it’s organizing a virtual coffee chat, joining a professional group, or hosting a small in-person gathering, find or create spaces where community can thrive.

Nurture Relationships:

Like that cherished memory of a spontaneous visit, build relationships through regular, thoughtful interactions. Be the one who checks in, shares a recipe, or offers a listening ear.

Be Adaptable:

Understand that community may look different at various stages of life. Some connections may be short-term, while others evolve into long-term relationships. Adjust your approach as your needs and circumstances change.

By being intentional and proactive, we can craft a community that supports, uplifts, and inspires us—even in the midst of life’s chaos.

How are you planning to build your community? What’s the first small step you’re comfortable taking today? Let’s share ideas and grow together.
